EARLY SCHOOL LEAVING, SUCH A PROBLEM!

Yes "Early School Leaving", such a problem and so many people dealing with it. And always the same questions: how to be efficient, how to solve the problem, etc. So 3 years ago, during a Grundtvig Conference in Paphos (Cyprus) I met colleagues from Malta and Sicily and we decided to apply for a Grundvig2 grant. The project was developed for 3 years now under the Grundtvig Learning Partnership framework even if it was not easy all days. Other partners, from Spain and France joined us, we exchanged our ideas about the phenomenon and tried to find out solutions. So, this is the blog of Eduaction, dedicated to the dissemination of the results and outcomes we have got. Here after you will find a description of the project. In the following weeks we plan to put more articles on the blog.

Topic:

The EduAction project is a Grundtvig learning partnership whose objective is to lead a qualitative research about the « Early School Leaving phenomenon. This phenomenon is quite complex and is related to the familial context, personality of learners, school background, open job market, social services. It is a Research-Action whose aim is to change the context to ameliorate the quality of life for the target group and the general quality of the education system. Partners are training centres in France, Spain, and Italy. The project started 2006 and lasts 3 years.

Results:

We have carried out a handbook of good practices analysed thanks to the SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, and Threat) methodology. A comparative survey was implemented. Thanks to the survey we have a better idea of the « Early School Leaving » phenomenon. Our survey is confirmed by the results of larger scale surveys at national level. Exchanges of learners, students, trainees were processed during the project. It confirms the usefulness of European mobilities to re-train Early School leavers using informal learning methods. Some elements related to the motivation of persons were highlighted during the surveys. An electronic platform was used by the partnership to communicate, as well as emails. A blog is available to promote and disseminate the results of the project.

First impacts:

Thanks to the collected good practices, we know better about the phenomenon than before. The surveys allow us to envisage possible educative solutions.
Thanks to the surveys, there is a better understanding of the « Early school leaving phenomenon »
European added value has been illustrated by the sharing of the understanding of the educative systems in the different countries, by blending our sectors in a mutual understanding way.
But it was also possible to show how rigid the education systems are sometimes and how to carry out new educative and innovative solutions!
We could check the necessity to develop proactive tools to have an impact on the behaviour of potential « Early School leavers ».

Dissemination conference:
